2021 TLC Seminars!!

We are so LUCKY to have KAYL McCANN and JESS MARTIN joining us for a fantastic, fun day of learning on the Thursday before the 2021 UKI Canadian Open.  We've geared this day of playful learning towards younger dogs, those just starting out as well as those 'pandemic pups' that are a little older but haven't had a chance to get out there in the agility world yet.

Have a look at the seminar descriptions below and if you'd like to apply, follow the links and instructions for each seminar.

Hope to see you there!

Registration fees: $175 for 1 working spot and 1 audit spot in the day.  $90 for Auditing the day (2 workshops)   Fees are due when you receive confirmation of your registration in the workshop.

AGILITY WORKSHOPS WITH KAYL McCANN
Thursday, Aug 26th - REACH Huron Equestrian Facility (169 Beech St. Clinton, On) - Same Location as Canadian Open (Aug 27-30)

Workshop 1: Future Star -  Skill Development - UKI/International Style
9:00am - 12:30pm - Limit 8 dogs.

This workshop would be suitable for handler/dog teams looking to build a more independent understanding of skills needed to conquer courses with an international flavour.  Independent skills & verbal understanding is imperative for this level of agility.  However,  many of these skills can be used with any organization.   The focus of this workshop is to understand how to train smarter so that the dog can truly understand their job, work with speed & attitude , all without doing a  million repetitions.   This workshop would be helpful for dogs to learn a more thorough understanding of the skills or for young dogs in the developmental stage.

The skills included in the workshop will include (but will not be limited to):
-  Collection (soft & tight turn cues)
- Threadles (Slices & Wraps)
- Backside Send Performance (Slice & Wraps)
- Tunnel Skills (Discriminations, Turns, Distractions)
- ByPass Cues (Handler Focus, Obstacle Distraction)

Expectation of Teams & Equipment Used:  This workshop will include just jumps & tunnels and will focus on teaching skills using just a few obstacles at a time.  Jumps will be kept at a  height that is most appropriate for each dog/handler team.  .  Depending on the age & skill level of the dogs, we may do some weave pole skills as well.  Dog & Handler Teams should have strong verbal control around other dogs and are able to stay on task while training along side other teams on the floor.   I prefer to work multiple teams at once time maximize floor time for everyone.   Dogs must be friendly towards other dogs to participate in this workshop.

Age & Experience level:  Due to the technicality of the skills, young dogs must be at least 10 months.   Dogs should already have experience with Jumps & Tunnels.  They should also have a reliable sit stay/wait.   Please note: these workshops are not well suited for dogs that need to work on speed & motivation as the skills we are  training will require thinking & problem solving skills.

Workshop 2:  From “Tweener” to Winner! Development Discovery Workshop
1:30pm - 5:00pm - Limit 8 dogs

This workshop is directed towards handlers interested in Competitive level agility and have young dogs that have some skills under their belt and are now ready to start putting things together.   This workshop is about discovery!!  The drills & sequences will be directed towards putting your skills & teamwork to the test so that Kayl can help you determine any possible holes in your development thus far.   This is a chance to get another set of experienced eyes on your team and gain some feedback of the direction you should be taking your training and development.    With dogs at the “Tweener” age, it can be challenging to know when they are ready to start actually running “real” courses.  It’s easy to progress forward and not notice gaps in their training which often leads to problems later on or a plateau in their progress.

In this workshop, dogs should have a good understanding (but do not have to be perfect at) skills like: Turning, independent backside sends, threadles, tunnel distraction etc.   If you’ve not trained with Kayl before, it could be very helpful to audit the morning session so you can learn HOW some of these skills are trained.   Kayl is very skilled at adapting the coaching or challenges to each individual team.  However,   the dogs in the seminar must be familiar with the skills listed above and ready to start putting them in a sequence.

Expectation of Teams & Equipment Used:  This workshop will include just jumps & tunnels and will focus sequencing skills together to work handlers timing & teamwork.    Dog & Handler Teams should have strong verbal control around other dogs and are able to stay on task while training along side other teams on the floor.  Dogs must be friendly towards other dogs to participate in this workshop.

Age & Experience level:  “Tweeners” are typically dogs over the age of 14 months, but it really depends on the dogs training & skill level.   This workshop is NOT limited to less experienced dogs. It could also be suitable for teams already competing but are still interested in making improvements in their dogs skills level and teamwork.  If you’d like to know if this workshop would be right for you, please email KaylMcCann.Seminars@Gmail.com

Jess' Bio

Jess Martin was introduced to the world of dog training at a young age, when her parents told her "if we get you a dog, you need to train it!"

After completing basic obedience training with her first dog Mikki, Jess was introduced to the world of agility and was hooked!

After transforming her timid, noise sensitive sheltie Dice into a World Champion agility dog, Jess began specializing in the topics of connection, motivation, and over excitement in performance dogs.

She has currently owned and trained 7 different breeds…from a Belgian Malinois to a Mini Dachshund!

Over the years she’s realized that to truly excel, every dog needs to be treated as an individual.

This has lead her to achievements such as:

  • 2010 AWC Gold Medalist

  • 2011 WAO Games Gold Medalist

  • 8x AAC Regional Champion

  • 5x AAC National Champion

Jess currently offers both in-person agility training at her facility in Erin ON, and a variety of online courses focusing on developing a connected team both on and off the agility field.
